8 Mile

Eminem is convincing in this hip hop remake of The Karate Kid. Every cliche is exploited to maximum effect with particular kudos for getting Kim Bassinger as his trailer trash mum, i'm sure the remit was the best looking woman who could possibly have spawned him. It'd be good to see Eminem acting someone other than himself as he is really good in this film. The scene where Xibit and middle aged woman engage in an improtu freestyle "battle" while getting their breakfast beggars belief. One of the better plane films i've seen recently.

Analyze That

Sequel to the film "Analyze This" where Billy Crystal plays a psycho analyst treating Robert Deniro as a mobster with mental issues. The first film (also seen on a plane) was pretty funny for the first half then went totally shite. This one is actually better with Deniro on top form. He doesn't quite reach the peaks of the plane film to end all plane films "Meet The Parents" but is pretty funny all in. It also meets the criteria that beffits a good plane film in that you really don't give two fucks how it ends. Pleasantly pointless.

Catch Me If You Can

As with most films i watch on planes i wouldn't be caught dead paying money to see a film like this. Spielberg of late has poured so much schmaltz on his films but this was actually not too bad. Its saving grace is Christopher Walken who is superb as the down trodden father who's hard time at the hands of the system is used as an excuse for his son (Leonardo Di Caprio)'s impressive fraudulant lifestyle. Quite long too which is always good on a long haul.

Surprisingly decent i'm mortified to admit. Dash, i really wanted to hate this as musicals are generally turgid.

Music store personnel and their attitude towards customers.

"These microphones are for 'high-end applications;'"
"I'm sorry I can't fix your stuff, there's a professional musician bringing in stuff I have to fix first"
"This delay pedal, I've not fixed it properly so I've not charged you but as long as you're careful, it should be fine"
"What is it?" (When presented with a MOTU 828 soundcard for repair.....one of the most popular soundcards in the world)
"I'm only going to sell this bass to someone who would really play it"

South Palm Beach, Florida

There were many aspirations that we had when we started this band. Many things we wanted to achieve and places we wanted to go. It must be said that playing at tea time in an empty stadium in Florida was probably not one of them. Going on tour with one of my favourite bands (The Cure) alongside a good few of our friends was an opportunity i jumped at ,but the harsh reality of sporadically scattered confused Floridians staring at our pasty frames wasn't quite what i imagined. It was outrageously hot and i'm guessing that most folks stayed inside until they really had to. It was all a bit odd and stayed much the same whilst The Rapture were on. Interpol fared better as it as getting dark and they have the luxury of having some hits. The Cure were majestic, though the encore was a bit cheery for my liking.

Jacksonville Florida - Freebird live.

This is a strange place. It seems like where people who inhabit the middle of nowhere go on holiday. Its so hot our eyes are sweating and our body clocks are unimpressed that according to them we are playing at 5 in the morning. The day was spent watching my favourite TV channel Fox "News". There is a feature on a man who has eaten 20 000 Big Macs. His moniker is "Big Mac Man". We also watch the comander in chief deliver an astoundingly patronising speech to the urban league. What he lacks in brains he more than makes up for in unintentional humour. Butlins should book him now for next summer.I love America. I get the impression from the fact that the other upcoming attractions at the venue (a Lynryd Skynrd theme bar) are Dokken and WASP that bands like ourselves don't come through town that often, with that in mind its not much of a surprise to find that we play to the smallest (though definitely not the least enthusiastic) crowd we've played to in years. We play a few songs we haven't done in a while and end up having fun. Or as much fun as you can have whilst playing our music. Roll on tomorrow.
